How Paris Shaped the Music
No city outside the Arab world has mattered more to its music. The chaabi cafés of Barbès gave Dahmane El Harrachi the audience for ‘Ya Rayah’; raï made Paris its second capital through Khaled’s global years, Cheikha Rimitti’s late coronation and Rachid Taha’s rock rewiring of the tradition; and Warda and Dalida were both, in different senses, France’s gifts to Cairo.
The pipeline runs both ways today. Souad Massi carried Algiers folk into French chanson, Soolking industrialised the rap-raï bridge, DJ Snake took the Franco-Algerian sound into stadium electronic music, and Yasmine Hamdan and Natacha Atlas both route their Arabic through Paris. The diaspora capital remains the sound’s biggest amplifier.
