Algerian raï legend whose decades of hits, including “Aïcha” and “Didi,” carried North African music to global audiences long before streaming existed.
Khaled Hadj Brahim began performing as a teenager in Oran under the name Cheb Khaled, part of a generation of young raï singers who updated a traditional, often censored genre with electric instrumentation and blunt, working class lyrics about love and hardship.
He relocated to France as raï faced pressure at home, and from Paris built a career that turned a regional Algerian style into an international phenomenon. “Didi” became a hit across the Arab world and Europe in 1992, while “Aïcha,” released in 1996, remains one of the best known songs ever recorded in French and Arabic combined.
Decades later, Khaled is still widely credited as the artist most responsible for introducing raï, and by extension North African pop more broadly, to listeners who had never encountered Arabic music before hearing him.
