Born in Brussels to an Egyptian father and a British mother who converted to Islam, Natacha Atlas grew up between cultures before her family settled in England when she was seven. That in-between upbringing became the defining feature of her music.
She first reached wider audiences as a vocalist with Trans-Global Underground, a British group blending Arabic, North African, and electronic sounds years before “world music” had settled into a marketable category. Her solo work since has ranged freely across Arabic classical maqam, French chanson, trip hop, and pop, unified mainly by a voice trained in the ornamented style of Umm Kulthum but comfortable over a drum machine.
Across seventeen albums and more than four decades of recording, she has remained one of the clearest examples of what Arabic music can sound like once it stops trying to explain itself to a Western audience and simply speaks in its own layered accent.
