Sudanese-American rapper and producer whose jazz-laced independent hip-hop made him one of the diaspora's most respected craftsmen.
Amir Mohamed el Khalifa, known as Oddisee, is a rapper and producer born in Washington, D.C. to a Sudanese father and African-American mother, raised between Maryland's suburbs and summers in Khartoum, and long based in Brooklyn. Over two decades of fiercely independent releases — as a solo artist and as one third of Diamond District — he has built a catalogue where jazz, go-go and soul samples carry writing about work, faith and in-betweenness. Projects like the AlWasta EP address his Sudanese identity directly, making him an elder statesman of the Arab and African diaspora's hip-hop lane.
