Khyam Allami is an Iraqi-British multi-instrumentalist and musicologist, born in Damascus to Iraqi parents and raised in London. Trained on violin and drums before devoting himself to the oud, he founded Nawa Recordings in 2014 — the label behind acclaimed releases from the band Alif, of which he is a member. His doctoral research and software work on Arabic tuning systems confront a quietly political question: why the default tools of electronic music assume Western tuning, and what it takes to compose outside it.
