Maryam Saleh grew up performing the songs of Sheikh Imam in Cairo's theater world, and that inheritance — political song delivered plainly — runs under everything she has made since, even at her most electronic.
Her collaborations map the modern Arab underground: Halawella with Zeid Hamdan, work with Maurice Louca, and the acclaimed 2017 album Lekhfa with Louca and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh. Few voices connect Egypt's protest-song past and its experimental present as directly.
