Nicknamed “The Baghdad Beatle,” al-Madfai fused Western guitar with traditional Iraqi music decades before genre fusion became a trend.
Ilham al-Madfai built a sound decades ahead of its time, layering Western guitar technique over traditional Iraqi maqam and folk melody at a moment when few Iraqi musicians were experimenting so openly with outside influence.
His run of albums through EMI, including the platinum-selling self-titled debut and 2003's “Baghdad,” made him one of the most recognizable Iraqi musicians of his generation, both inside the country and among the diaspora.
