An Algerian singer who became one of the defining voices of Egyptian Arabic music despite never being Egyptian herself.

Warda Mohammed Ftouki, known simply as Warda across the Arab world, built a career unusual for its geography: an Algerian singer who became one of the most beloved voices in Egyptian Arabic music, performing in the Egyptian dialect for the bulk of her decades-long career.

Her powerful, classically trained voice made her a fixture of pan-Arab music for the second half of the twentieth century, performing until shortly before her death in 2012.
