Beirut-born, Paris-raised trumpeter and composer who carries Arabic maqam into jazz on a quarter-tone trumpet.

Born in Beirut in 1980 and raised in Paris after his family left Lebanon during the civil war, Ibrahim Maalouf plays a quarter-tone trumpet developed by his father, the trumpeter Nassim Maalouf — a fourth valve that lets the instrument speak the microtones of Arabic maqam.

That hybrid voice has made him one of the most successful instrumentalists in France, with multiple Victoires de la Musique, a string of film scores, and collaborations spanning jazz, pop, and Arabic classical repertoire. His arena-scale concerts have done for the trumpet what few instrumentalists of his generation have managed anywhere.
