Palestinian Jordanian collective who built “shamstep,” a genre that fuses dabke and Arabic folk rhythm with electronic bass music.
Formed in Amman in 2013 by musicians scattered across Palestine, Jordan, and the wider Levantine diaspora, 47SOUL set out to make music for weddings and protests alike, built on the electrified mijwiz and arghul lines of dabke folk tradition.
Their sound, which the band named “shamstep” after Bilad al Sham, the historical Levant, pairs that folk backbone with dub bass, hip hop cadence, and festival scale electronic production. The 2015 debut “Shamstep” and the 2017 follow up “Balfron Promise,” recorded in a London tower block, established the group as a bridge between Arabic wedding music and the UK’s club scene.
A Tiny Desk Concert and years of touring have made 47SOUL a reference point for younger Arab artists looking to sample folk tradition without treating it as a museum piece.
